The Summit community proudly participates in the New York Road Runners Mighty Milers fitness program. Mighty Milers is a running program for youth of all fitness levels, and is designed to get kids moving and prevent obesity and illness. Summit introduced this program in October 2015, and currently has over 50 students participating!
Each Mighty Miler sets an individual goal to run and/or walk a certain distance during the program cycle. The group meets every Tuesday and Thursday to run longer distances up to 3-5 miles. They also work during Physical Education classes to get outside and track miles and improve run times.
“Our staff has never seen so much enthusiasm in kids running over such a short period of time,” said Chris Iannucci, Physical Education teacher and Director of Recreation Activities. “Students that never thought they could run before are coming to Mighty Milers every week to shave time off their miles or to just log more of them on their charts. This spring we plan to do a local 5k race together as a Mighty Milers Team!”
