In addition to the regular school and residence program, Summit offers a Pragmatics program. This program is designed to serve children whose combination of emotionalÊmsand neurological impairments require an even more sheltered learning and living environment.
To meet the special needs of these children, the Pragmatics program combines an individually designed therapy program with a non-traditional educational format focusing on improved socialization, motor and cognitive development, vocational and Pragmatics, and specialized academic training.
In the classroom, students are taught basic life training skills such as personal grooming; shopping; traveling; money management; health and first aid; etc. Because the classroom is individually oriented, each student works at his or her own pace to acquire those Pragmatics needed at his or her current level of functioning. In addition,Êsince many students in the Pragmatics program are able to achieve academically at an advanced level, Summit offers courses to challenge these students' capabilities.
A major focus of the Pragmatics program is the preparation of each child for life after Summit. For some, their course will involve gradual integration with Summit's more mainstream population and eventual return to the community.
For others, our emphasis is on the child's development of the social and daily living skills needed for successful transition from the campus environment at Summit to supportive work and living progra for young adults in the community.ÊOur social workers work with families and sources of funding to locate for each student a residence and day program that offers the appropriate ratio of supervision and independence as they age out of the education system.
